Beacon student Carlos Almasque recently received a $3,200 scholarship aimed at needy first-generation, minority, and new American students attending Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) and Florida Independent College Fund (CICF) member schools.

This year, 30 students received $96,000 in scholarships funded through a grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in partnership with the UPS Foundation.

The Council of Independent Colleges is an association of 758 nonprofit independent colleges and universities, state-based councils of independent colleges, and other higher-education affiliates, that support college and university leadership, advance institutional excellence, and enhance public understanding of independent higher education’s contributions to society.

Founded in 1951, the UPS Foundation leads the United Parcel Service’s global citizenship programs and is responsible for facilitating community involvement to local, national, and global communities. Its philanthropic focus includes health & humanitarian relief, equity and economic empowerment, local engagement and planet protection.

Almasque is a sophomore majoring in computer information systems.
